Softball team on four-game win streak

A cold day had no effect on the hot-hitting Hurons as they took both ends of a softballdoubleheader from St. Ignace, 19-2 and 15-0 Tuesday at home. The highlight of the first game came in the seven-run fourth inning when senior left fielder Cassy Brege and junior first baseman C.J. Calabrese each hit home runs. The Hurons also scored seven in the first inning, three in the second and two in the third. On the other side, Saint hitters didn?t get a hit in either game, as they played outdoors for just the second time this spring.

Jess Konieczny went the first two innings, walking two and striking out one. Megan Hanson pitched the last two, walking two and striking out two. Brege added a pair of singles, Calabrese had a single and two walks, and Ashley Fleming had a pair of doubles for the Hurons.

ROGERS CITY used another strong hitting attack to sink the Saints in the nightcap. Calabrese followed her homer in the first with another home run in her first at bat of the second game. She also pitched, going all three innings, using just 45 pitches to strike out six while walking three. The Hurons had six hits and benefited from five walks and eight Saint errors. Hanson had two singles in the contest.

?For the weather the way that it was, I thought we did a good job,? said Hurons coach Karl Grambau. ?The battle was not only the other team but the elements.?

IN THE season?s opening doubleheader with Alpena last Thursday, the Hurons came out on the short end of the score in each game, 12-2 in the first and 7-4 in the nightcap. Alpena touched Calabrese for 11 hits and 12 runs, while she struck out one and walked one in the loss. Jess Konieczny had two doubles in the game. In the second game, Konieczny started on the mound and homered at the plate, but the Hurons fell short. Konieczny?s three-run homer in the fifth inning made the game close. Cassy Brege and Calabrese each had doubles. Konieczny allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out one in seven innings.

THINGS TURNED around for the Hurons over the weekend, as they won the trophy in the Alcona tournament with two wins in as many games. In the first game, the Hurons had a 15-0 mercy-rule win over Rudyard. Calabrese no-hit the Bulldogs, missing a perf

ect game by a harmless walk. She struck out six in four innings of work. The Hurons collected six hits and were aided by 12 walks. Calabrese helped her cause with a triple and a single. Freshman center fielder Laura Konieczny had a hit and four stolen bases.

Alcona, who defeated Rudyard 19-1 earlier, squared off with the Hurons in the title game. Rogers City fell behind 3-0, but came back with a run in the third and one in the fourth before breaking out in a six-run fifth inning. The Hurons won 11-3. ?It was a great come-from-behind win for us,? said Grambau. ?We battled back really well. It was good for us.?

THE BIG rally came after two out in the decisive fifth inning. Four hit batters and nine walks combined with six Huron hits to power the win. Sarah Dove delivered a key triple in the rally, while Brege had two hits in the game. Jess Konieczny went all seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks. She struck out nine. The Hurons are back in action today in Newberry, and then play in the Boyne City tournament Saturday and in Rudyard Tuesday. The next home date is May 1.
