Viking softball opens at home next Thursday

The Viking softball team has been practicing the last couple of weeks for the season to begin and the waiting game isn?t quite over yet as Posen has its season-opener on the home field next Thursday against Johannesburg-Lewiston. The Vikings play their first three doubleheaders at home, including a key North Star League twinbill April 19 against Hillman.

The Tigers have a core of returning players and are expected to be one of many contenders at the district tournament in Rogers City the first week in June. Posen has received recognition in the Division IV state polls and is ranked fifth at the dawn of a new season. A good reason for that is because coach Glenn Budnick brings back all but one starter from a group that took the school?s first regional championship. The coach lost slugger Julie Lewandowski but has former starter Danielle Smolinski back from a knee injury.

?We have a wealth of experience. The strength of our team right now is that we have a lot of girls who have played a lot of innings in their careers here,? said Budnick. Next Thursday?s doubleheader behind the high school begins at 4 p.m.
