Where the Calla Lilies bloom

?Where the Calla Lilies bloom? sounds like a song or book title, but actually it denotes the location of at least three very beautiful Calla Lily plants: at the Rogers City Post Office. They are there because maintenance employee Don Kuznicki grew them from some bulbs he received from his uncle who passed away April 11, 1992. ?I got them from my uncle Stanley Nowicki of Manistee years ago, and I grew them here at the post office. They?ve grown here ever since and they bloom every year around April 11 just in time for the anniversary of his death.

?My uncle loved flowers and this was one of his favorite ones,? Kuznicki continued. ?I cherish them dearly. This is really a labor of love?I think that?s why they grow so well.? Once they are finished blooming, Kuznicki cuts off the flower and lets the foliage grow until fall before pruning them back. He lets them die off, and then stores them in a cool location until spring, transplanting them when he finds several sprouts coming up in the same pot.

?SOMETIMES IN March they?ll start popping out of the ground. I use good potting soil and Miracle Grow for them. Every year they grow about four feet high and we get one white Calla Lily per plant.? Kuznicki wanted to show off two other Calla Lilies he had on display between the postal workers at the window. Back into the post office Kuznicki went, and as pictures were being taken of the two huge C

alla Lily plants with flowers, a smaller potted flower plant was noticed that had been decorated with a myriad of postmarks and cancelled envelopes, as if they had been decoupaged on the pot.

?You might want to take notice of that pot as well,? Kuznicki said. ?Jan Pawelek bought that flower pot at a superstore about three weeks ago in Alpena,? Kuznicki said. ?She?s a rural carrier who?s working at Hawks temporarily. ?Look closely at the different postmarks and envelopes on the pot,? Kuznicki said. ?There are two of them from right here in Rogers City from the early 1900s ? but the pot was manufactured in China!?

Anyone visiting the post office in the next week may wish to view ?where the Calla Lilies bloom? on the front desk and in between the postal workers at the main window, and also take a look at the flower pot, ?made in China? with Rogers City postmarks on it.
