WVXA finalist for national award

Radio station WVXA-FM, Rogers City (96.7 FM) has been nominated for a national award given by the National Association of Broadcasters. Forty finalists for the NAB Crystal Radio Awards competition were named by the National Association of Broadcasters. Since 1987, the NAB Crystal Radio Awards have recognized radio stations for their outstanding year-round community service efforts.

?NAB staff have told us that WVXA is the first northern Michigan radio station to ever be awarded the finalist?s honor for the Crystal Award competition. In fact, no station north of Lansing has ever had this distinction,? said Dr. James C. King, the Director of Broadcasting for Xavier University and the X-Star Radio Network.

?EVEN AS a finalist in the Crystal Awards competition, WVXA has brought international recognition to the entire northeast region of northern Michigan.? Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio operates a group of seven public radio stations in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan. Xavier has operated WVXA in Rogers City since 1998.

?In these days of disappearing local radio stations, this is truly an honor we take pride in, given the highly competitive nature of this awards competition. The Rogers City community and the towns surrounding Rogers City have much to be proud of in their continuing support of WVXA which has been operated by Xavier University for over five years now,? Dr. King said.

According to Dr. King, the station is operated by radio professionals who are life-long residents of northern Michigan and place a premium value on the station?s responsibility to serve the needs of the local communities. THE X-STAR Radio Network, owned by Xavier University (a prominent Jesuit university headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio), has a long-standing commitment to serving its various communities with top-notch local programming including classic radio comedies and dramas, National Public Radio news, local sports and news, hospital reports, obituaries, and radio trade/sell programs.

On weekends, WVXA (96.7 FM) in Rogers City provides non-stop polka

programs with host Barney Tomas Saturdays from 8-11-a.m. and Sundays from 4-7 p.m. The National Association of Broadcasters, an association of more than 12,000 radio stations in the United States and nearly 1,000 television stations, presents an annual award for excellence in programming and community service at its annual convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Crystal Awards are given to stations in five different market sizes: Rural, Small, Medium, Large, and Major. Given the relatively small population base of Rogers City, the station?s city of license, WVXA was nominated for the top award in the Rural Division.

The winners in each division will be announced at the annual Radio Luncheon in Las Vegas on Tuesday. WVXA will be represented at the NAB luncheon by Kimberly Orr, the sales manager for WVXA. Six other officials from the X-Star Radio Network will be present at the luncheon to represent WVXU, another finalist for the NAB Crystal Awards in the Major Market category. The finalists were selected by a panel of judges representing broadcasting, community service organizations and public relations firms.
