Cassy Brege, Kyle Greene names athletes of the year at RCHS

The Huron Sports Boosters sponsored the annual All-Sports Awards Night, awarding most of the hardware to RCHS senior student athletes. Top honors, as female and male athletes of the year, went to seniors Cassy Brege and Kyle Greene. Greene, the winner of the J.A. Valentin Award, as presented by athletic director Pat Lamb, set records as a football receiver, a high-scoring basketball center, and an all-state performer in track.

Brege is a hard-hitting outfielder on this spring?s softball team, and also played on the girls basketball team. She won the Danny Rose Award, presented by RCHS principal Jim Connell. Brege and Tim Cercone were awarded the Him Quinn Award, given to reward athletic accomplishment and scholarship. Former RCHS principal and superintendent Delmar Conley presented the honors. Andy Centala, a volunteer assistant wrestling coach, had the honor of giving the John Geyer Award to his father Robert Centala. The elder Centala has been a fixture at many Huron sporting events, supporting his grandchildren, and often is asked to sing the National Anthem at games and meets.

The Geyer Award is given for outstanding dedication by a volunteer or supporter of RCHS sports. The Judy Paradise Award, given for dedication on and off the field, was presented by Huron coach and master of ceremonies for the evening Karl Grambau to senior Megan Marx.

Football coach Bob Brietzke awarded senior Justin Kelley with the Mark Smolinski Award, given for outstanding dedication on and off the football field. The JoLen Flewelling Award, given to a junior athlete who participates in volleyball and basketball, was won by Megan Hanson and Ashley Fleming. Brent Freel won the John Florip Award, given to the outstanding freshman wrestler.

The Chuck Altman Award, given to an outstanding freshman track athlete, and the Tom Rayha Memorial Award will be awarded at a later date. Each sport had most valuable and most improved honors given at the awards night. Most valuable in their sports were: Lacey Kreft and Aaron Smuda (cross country; Megan Marx (fall and winter cheerleading); Tim Cercone and Kyle Greene (football); Ashley Fleming (basketbal

l); Michael Haseluhn (golf); Dylan Centala (wrestling); Kyle Greene (basketball); Ashley Fleming (volleyball); and Nathan Darga, Kari Rhode and Amanda Minton (bowling).

Most improved for their sports were: Terri Schultz and Derek McLennan (cross country); Brittany Hincka (fall cheerleading); Cody Wenzel (football); Lindsey Fleming (basketball); Jason Belusar (golf); Chris Rhode (wrestling); Adam LaLonde and Chris Paschke (basketball), Megan Hanson (volleyball); Kari Grigg (winter cheerleading); and Travis Hincka and Heather Kowalski (bowling). Awards for spring sports will be announced after the seasons conclude.

Boosters president Mike Stempky honored former cross country and softball coach Charlie Fairbanks, and retiring football coach Bob Brietzke with special honors, recognizing their years of service. Journalism teacher Jim Hopp concluded the evening with a slide presentation highlighting the sports seasons.
