Hurons finish second at home tourney; lose two to Alpena

The Huron softball team suffered a pair of losses to Alpena Tuesday, going down 9-4 in the first game and 15-5 in game two. In the first game the Hurons were up 2-0 in the fifth before a big inning came for the Wildcats. They scored nine times, with eight of them unearned, to saddle C.J. Calabrese with the loss.

?C,J. pitched a great game, good enough to win,? said coach Karl Grambau ?We are showing improvement. This game should help us in the future by what we learned from it.? Five Alpena runs led to the win in the second game. Ashley Fleming belted her first home run of the season and Megan Marx added two hits.

SATURDAY, AT the Rogers City Insurance Invitational, the Hurons won the first game and lost the second. The Hurons defeated Sault Ste. Marie in the opener, 3-1. Rogers City got on the scoreboard in the third as the Hurons put up two runs. Ashley Fleming, the only Huron with two hits in the game, tripled in the sixth and scored on an error.

C.J. Calabrese had an RBI double in the third. Fleming started and got the win, pitching into the fourth inning. She struck out nine and allowed

three hits. Calabrese worked the last 2 2/3, allowing two hits and striking out two. Marquette won the tournament by topping the Hurons 5-0 in the championship game. Five Hurons had one hit in the contest including Megan Hanson, Laura Konieczny, Jenna Vogelheim, Sara Dove and Fleming. Calabrese surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and three walks.

LAST THURSDAY, the Hurons swept Alcona by scores of 14-4 and 14-3. Calabrese had a solo homer in the first, a double in the second, a single in the fifth, and she pitched for the win. Fleming went four-for-four with three RBI while Megan Marx had three hits.

The hitting continued in the second game as Ashley Fleming took the win on the mound. The Hurons had just five hits, but benefited by 12 Tiger walks.
