Prosecutor to seek a sixth term; two former commissioners join the race

Some people with familiar names have decided to run for county offices or seats on the board of commissioners with a Tuesday deadline looming for candidates vying for partisan offices. Don McLennan, who has served as Presque Isle County prosecutor since 1981, filed nominating petitions Monday with 60 signatures on them.

Two former county commissioners, an incumbent, and a newcomer have filed for a board seat within the last week. Gary Nowak of Rogers City, who is serving as a Rogers City councilman, will be running in District 3, while Wayne Vermilya of Allis Township filed his petition April 30 in District 1.

BOTH NOWAK and Vermilya did not retain their seats on the board two years ago when the board shrank from eight to five board members with reapportionment. The man who defeated Vermilya, incumbent Bob Schell, filed with the county clerk Apr

il 30, and also will be running in District 1. Newcomer Michael A. Rivenburgh of Presque Isle, who is the Rogers City Area Schools technology coordinator, filed his nominating petition Monday.

The candidates join Sally Goupell of Posen, a District 5 candidate, and incumbent Gary Wozniak of District 4. With Janet Lamb announcing she would not run for Register of Deeds and retire at the end of her term, it has left that county office race wide open. Chief deputy Register of Deeds, Cathy Idalski of Belknap Township, has put in her bid to take over management of the office after turning in her nominating petitions.

TERRY LYNN BASEL of Belknap will run for the treasurer?s seat with no party affiliation. She handed in her 78 signatures Friday. That now makes two candidates in the race for treasurer, as incumbent Pat Cornett will seek another term. Sheriff Terry Flewelling and clerk Sue Rhode announced their candidacies last month. The deadline to file for those running with no party affiliation is July 15. The deadline for partisan candidates is 4 p.m. Tuesday.
