Posen board handled issues

Following last month?s meeting that was marked by budget cuts, down-sizing announcements and a large audience, the Posen Consolidated School Board meeting on Monday was relatively straight forward and business-as-usual. The Board approved the amended budget for 2003-04 and the proposed budget for 2004-05. Superintendent Dennis Stratton emphasized the need to have a budget without deficit spending, as required by state law.

The amended budget for 2003-04 was revised to show revenues of $2,392,997. The expenditures for the coming year are $2,364,534 with revenues of only $2,308,125 which means that $56,409 will have to be transferred from the equity fund to cover the shortfall. The projected fund balance for the end of the current year is $115,044. Superintendent Stratton pointed out, ?The fund balance for the end of next year is only $58,634 and that, even with the $300,000 cuts in the budget that have already been made, we still have to do a lot, we still have to hope that other resources and revenues are not affected. We also may have to take some other actions.?

The Board noted with satisfaction that, as a result of the election on June 14, they are now able to collect the full 18 mills up to the year 2006. Voters approved the measure by more than 2 to 1 margin. Stratton said, ?My response is that it?s a good thing that helps a great deal but it isn?t the answer to all the problems.?
