Five to compete for Miss Rogers City title

2004-Miss Rogers City Five RCHS seniors will take the stage in the Miss Rogers City Pageant July 30. The girls will compete for scholarship money and gifts in the annual pageant supervised by the Nautical City Festival Committee. The contestants, under the direction of Pennie Kelly, have been practicing their opening dance routine and talent presentations for the past three weeks, and look forward to having a great show.

Contestant number one is Brittany Hincka, the daughter of Al and Mindy Hincka. She began her education at St. Michael?s Lutheran School, continuing on at Rogers City Elementary, the Grambau Center and finally RCHS. While a high school student, she has participated in Voiced In Harmony, the RCHS Drama Club, and has served as a class officer. After graduation, she plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to major in psychology and minor in interior design. She said entering the pageant was important ?to learn about the city I?ve grown up in, to meet new people and faces, to make new friends of all ages, and to have fun.?

Bianca Pena, contestant number two, lists Kimberly and Andrew Sobeck as her guardians. Her education began in Germany through the third grade, continued in Texas for grade four, Georgia for fifth grade, Rhode Island for sixth grade, Kentucky for seventh, and eighth and ninth in Maryland before coming to RCHS. She is a member of the Key Club, Drama Club and the National Honor Society. Plans after graduation include attending Lake Superior State University to pursue a career as a dentist or lawyer. ?My reason for entering the pageant is to try something new and have a great time,? she said.

Contestant number three is Desiree Farmer, the daughter of David Farmer and Donna Emmons. She attended St. Ignatius Catholic School before attending RCHS. The National Honor Society, Drama Club, and Voices in Harmony have been among her interests while at RCHS. She plans to attend college after graduation from high school and study design. Becoming a part of the pageant has been on her mind for a long time, she said. ?Ever since I was a little girl, I new this was something that I wanted to do,? she said. ?I knew it would be an awesome experience and it would be tons of fun.?

Kristyn Blackmer, contestant number four, is the granddaughter of Leon and Florence Blackmer. She attended Rogers City Elementary and the Grambau Center before her high school career at RCHS. While at RCHS, she has been a member of the Key Club and National Honor Society while enjoying archery, in-line skating and writing poetry. Her future ambitions include attending LSSU to study accounting, and then in the more distant future to have a family and a to have a big house with a big back yard. ?I entered the pageant to have fun and

a great experience this summer,? she said.

Contestant number five, Kristy Curtis, is the daughter of Alan and Sharon Grulke, and Terry and Julie Curtis. She attended pre-school at St. John Lutheran, before enrolling at Rogers City Elementary, the Grambau Center, and RCHS. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Natural Helpers, Key Club and Student Council. Her plans beyond high school include attending GVSU to study physical therapy, specializing in working with children. ?I entered the pageant because I hope to gain self-confidence. I think that the pageant is an experience every girl should consider.?

THE CURRENT Miss Rogers City, Christine Belusar, the daughter of David and Carol Belusar, will be on hand to help hand out awards. Art Ross will serve as master of ceremonies, Mike Klann is the sound engineer, and photography is done by Richard Lamb. More information on the Nautical City Festival will be included in the annual ?Summer Fun? publication, to be published in next week?s Presque Isle County Advance and Onaway Outlook.
