Sheriff?s office to be challenged in November

The office of Presque Isle County sheriff, currently held by Terry Flewelling, will be challenged in the general election November 2. Scott A. Witkowski of Rogers City filed the needed signatures Monday with county clerk Sue Rhode. Witkowski, who is running with no party affiliation, originally filed nominating petitions July 1 with 81 signatures.

Rhode checked the names to find only 55 signers were registered voters, which was five short of what was needed.

WITH LESS than two weeks to go, he went back out and got another 15. Eight of those signatures were invalid, but he still had two more than he needed with 62 signatures. The only race for a county-wide office had been for treasurer. Republican incumbent Patricia J. Cornett is opposed by Terry Lynn Basel, who declared no party affiliation. That race won?t be decided until November.

The rest of the candidates for county offices include: Susan Rhode, clerk; Cathy Idalski, register of deeds; Norm Quaine, county surveyor; and Don McLennan, prosecutor.

NO CANDIDATE had filed for drain commissioner as of Tuesday at 2 p.m., including Joe LaFave, the man holding down the position until his term expires. The deadline for a candidate running with no party affiliation is today (Thursday). Nominating petitions need to be in the county clerk?s before 4 p.m.

The races for seats on the board of commissioners will be interesting in the primary election August 3. Twelve candidates, nine Democrats and three Republicans, filed nominating petitions in all five districts before the deadline in May.
