Posen takes early season winning streak to Mio

It’s been a season of good starts for the Vikings girls basketball team. With a 61-23 blowout at Hale Tuesday, Posen improved to 3-0 on the season, which is a tremendous start to the ’04 campaign, plus it gives the red and white momentum going into an early-season test at Mio. The winner of the matchups between Mio and Posen tonight and October 7 will go a long way in deciding the North Star League champ. The Vikings are 2-0 in the NSL.

To defeat the Thunderbolts and move a step closer to their goal of taking a league title, the girls need to stick to the script from the first three games, which has been all about good starts.

IN THE first three games, Posen has never trailed, starting each game with the first basket, but that has only been a warm-up for what was in store in the second half. “We have played great ball in the third quarter,” said coach Tom Schellie. The Vikings, led by senior Whitney Meeder’s 10 third quarter points, lit up Hale Tuesday during the quarter 18-4.

Schellie has been impressed with the outstanding second half efforts of the squad and the smothering team defense. “They come out and are ready to give some more,” said Schellie.

MEEDER FINISHED w

ith a game-high 15 points for the Vikings and ended up with seven steals. “She drives the lane and is a good ball handler,” he said of his top scorer. The scoring was evenly distributed, though, which is another positive Schellie pointed out. Senior Katie Lewandowski had nine points, while senior Megan Latz and sophomore Mary Calhoun both had eight points each. Latz picked up her game in the second half, scoring all of her points in the final 16 minutes. The junior varsity improved its record to 2-1 with a 38-27 victory over Hale. Jenny Ciarkowski had a game-high 17 points, while Michelle Mulka had 10.

THE VARSITY won its first league game of the season last Thursday against Fairview on the home floor, 42-36. Meeder and sophomore Roxann Hincka each netted 13 points. Meeder cleaned the boards with nine rebounds, while Hincka had nine steals. Calhoun was steady again, with eight points and nine rebounds. The JV lost in overtime, 46-41, which was their first loss of the season. Mulka was the leading scorer with 11 points. The JV starts tonight’s action at 6 p.m. The next home game is Tuesday against Cedarville with the earlier start time of 5 p.m.
