The wait came to an end, as Posen plays its first game and rolls to a win

The Posen girls basketball players had to wait and watch while other schools started their season last week, but they had their first action of the season Tuesday and made good on the opportunity, routing De Tour, 56-34. Whitney Meeder, who played in the Alpena Wildcat basketball program last season, led the Vikings with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow senior Megan Latz had 12 points of her own.

“We looked pretty good,” said coach Tom Schellie, opening his third season as the head coach of the varsity. Posen started the game with a 12-point advantage after the first quarter, 19-7. De Tour kept the game close in the second quarter and was down by seven when Posen went to the free throw line with 1.1 seconds. The shot was missed but Meeder grabbed what would be one of her three offensive rebounds she would convert for points, to increase the lead to nine at the halftime buzzer. The score was 30-21.

The Vikings pulled away in the second half by playing sound defense. “The press worked good,” said Schellie. “We forced a lot of turnovers. We have some things to work on, and we were nervous, but it was a good outing.” Sophomore Mary Calhoun finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. The junior varsity started the season on a high note as well, blasting the De Tour JV by 52 points. The final score was 65-13.

Jenny Ciarkowski ripped the nets for 25 points, while Michelle Mulka had 16. The home opener is tonight against conference foe Fairview with the JV starting the evening at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Posen travels to Hale.
