Two of the league?s top contenders to battle in Posen

The Viking girls basketball team improved its North Star League record to 4-1 with a 57-46 win over Au Gres on the home floor last Thursday, but couldn’t come up with the season sweep Tuesday on the road against pesky Cedarville. Posen, (6-3 overall) which has key conference games in the next eight days, is still in the hunt for a conference title and will be tested at home tonight (Thursday) against Hillman. The JV starts the action at 6 p.m.

When looking ahead to the district tournament, which tips off in six weeks, Hillman is expected to be one of the tougher teams trying to shake the Vikings from their reign as district champs. This is round one with the Tigers with the second game a little more than a week before the playoffs.

TO WIN A NSL title, or a share of it, the Vikings need to defeat Hillman and take care of Mio the second time around. The Thunderbolts handled Posen the first time around and the rematch in Posen is a week from tonight. The Vikings defeated Au Gres by having an outstanding night on the boards (48), well past the per-game goal of 40 set by coach Tom Schellie. Mary Calhoun was the leading rebounder with 15, followed by 11 from Roxann Hincka.

Whitney Meeder sparked the scoring attack with three, three pointers and finished with 19 points. Calhoun was close behind with 17 points,

while Hincka had 15.

THE GIRLS got off to a slow start against Cedarville and trailed 21-7 after the first quarter. Trojan Marcelle Reno had three, three pointers in the quarter and had 11 of Cedarville’s first quarter points. Trojan coach Tom Wilson told Schellie after the game he didn’t know where that scoring touch came from. She had never scored that many in a game. “That killed us,” said Schellie. The Cedarville lead was 41-19 at the half, but the Vikes came out and turned the tide in the second half, outscoring the Trojans 20-14 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the final stanza.

“WE SHOWED up in the second half,” said Schellie. It was too deep of a hole to dig out of as Cedarville secured the split, 65-53. Schellie said one of the key stats was the 18 first half turnovers. The girls trimmed that to six in the second half and had success. Hincka paced the scoring with 20 points and had 11 boards. Meeder had 10 points. The JV lost its game to Cedarville, 57-50. Michelle Mulka torched the net for 23 points. Jenny Ciarkowski had eight. The junior varsity record is 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the NSL.
