RC schools deal with projected shortfall

The Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education proposed changes to the school equity fund to counter the effect of deficit spending in the coming year. Revised budget figures for 2004-2005 show projected revenue at $4,996,400 while expenses stand at $5,264,087 for a $267,687 shortfall. Board policy in the past has been to maintain an fund equity level of 20 percent, however, business manager Don Schaedig recommended this be reduced to 15 percent to cover the deficit.

The change must go through two readings before taking effect. The meeting on Monday was the first reading of the policy change. School superintendent Ed Schultz announced the resignation of Kristy Smolinski as the varsity volleyball coach effective October 25. The board approved the selection of Mary Fairbanks as coach for the 2004-2005 season.

business, Schaedig reported that no agreement had been reached with the employees’ union on a candidate to fill the vacant food supervisor position. The two-hour, part-time food supervisor position is currently being handled on a substitute basis. A number of citizens were in attendance with some people taking the opportunity to address the board on various issues, including the cost of food provision at St. Ignatius school, computer classes and student participation on the school board.

Schaedig reported that 25 RCHS students were participating in the dual enrollment program at Alpena Community College.

Teacher Vicki Bruder addressed the issue from the audience saying that the school board could consider the certification of existing teachers with advanced degrees for these courses, allowing students to take the courses in the school instead of traveling to Alpena.
