Fleming makes AP All State team

Ashley Fleming earned “Player of the Year” in the Straits Area Conference and all-state, first team by the Associated Press. The senior center, a four-year starter on the varsity team, ended her career as the all-time leading scorer in Rogers City basketball history. She tallied 1,756 points in 90 games, a 19.5 average. She also pulled down 13 rebounds per game for her career and her team had a 58-32 record for her four years.

“What she has done for our basketball program is just phenomenal. She was always a great, great player. Her disposition on the court ane her demeanor has gotten her many compliments from other coaches, officials, and fans,” said coach Karl Grambau. “I’m so happy that she is going to go on to Ferris and play some more basketball. She is truly the rock of our program that we have built around for the past four years.”

Fleming topped the conference first team which also includes Danielle Fegan (17.0 points per game), a sophomore, and senior Lindsey Andrews (8.0 ppg) of Sault Ste. Marie; sophomore Amanda Blaskoski (12.5 ppg) of Cheboygan; Liz Stempki (20.0 ppg) and Megan Hunter, both seniors of St. Ignace; and senior Tina Ganga (14.5 ppg) of Rudyard. Fleming led the Hurons with a 22.4 scoring average. She tallied 515 points on the season, with 109 coming at the free throw line where she shot 59 percent. Earning honorable mention on the squad was a trio of seniors, Megan Hanson, Becky Bruning, and Sara Dove.

Hanson started at guard, and was second on the team in scoring with 4.8 per game. She led the team with 12 three-pointers.

Bruning started at forward where she collected many rebounds and averaged 4.5 points per game.

Dove anchored the point

guard position, adding 4.4 points per game, and hit five three-pointers.

The Hurons finished fourth in the conference at 6-6 behind Sault High (12-0), Cheboygan (9-3), and St. Ignace (8-4). Rudyard placed fifth in the SAC at 5-7 ahead of Lincoln-Alcona (2-10) and Newberry (0-12). On the season the Hurons averaged 46.3 points per game while allowing 42.1 points from the opposition. The players connected on 47 percent of their free throws (193-of-408).

The team hit 27 three-pointers with three players accounting for the total. In addition to Hanson and Dove, sophomore Laura Konieczny had 10 on the season.

Rogers City finished the season at 14-9 after district tournament wins over Onaway, 53-11, and Mio, 46-45. The team ended its season with a 65-45 loss to district champion Whittemore-Prescott.
