Police were still searching for the man who held up the Wolverine branch of the Onaway Credit Union. Mary Ann Heidemann was selected to be the new CDC director by the Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners. The Onaway police department was planning to apply for a grant from the state for a snowmobile to use to patrol area trails. Y2K was near, and there was expectation of computer problems.

Presque Isle County Equalization Director Laurie Spencer resigned to accept a position as equalization director of Grand Traverse County. Winners of the Chamber of Commerce Christmas decorating contest were the residences of John Malay, Ray Szymoniak, Ralph Shea, Larry Taylor, Mark Malay, Steve Northrop, and Robert Schell.

Officials of the proposed new pulp mill were confident the D&M Railroad would stay in business to handle traffic between the mill and Alpena. A new program at the Mackinac Bridge was providing transportation for snowmobiles to cross the bridge.

20 years ago December 26, 1984 Onaway city commissioners approved a radio maintenance contract with Motorola and Cook Communications. Joseph Gustin was named as the new postmaster in Tower. Onaway art class students decorated the windows of Lynn Street Manor.

25 years ago * December 26, 1979

State Sen. Mitch Irwin announced revenue sharing of $56,143 for Onaway, and $6,771 for Millersburg. Roger Domke of Ocqueoc and Jetre Schuler of Millersburg were named to the dean’s list of Muskegon Business College. Onaway Boy Scout Troop 68 held a Court of Honor at St. Paul Hall.
