Volleyball Hurons off to a strong start

The Rogers City Hurons volleyball team traveled to Alpena Monday night and swept the three-game match against the arch-rival Wildcats. “We won the first game, which was a good psychological boost,” Coach Mary Fairbanks said. The team went on to sweep the match, 25-15, 25-19, and 25-18. Ashley Fleming had 8 kills, 1 block, 3 ace serves and 5 digs. Becky Bruning followed with 6 kills, 4 ace serves and 5 digs and Megan Hanson had 5 digs and 8 set assists.

The team opened their volleyball season at the Traverse City Central Invitational last Saturday and came away with a 2 and 2 match record. The Hurons defeated the Holland West Ottawa and the Glen Lake teams while dropping their matches against Traverse City Central and Petoskey. Fleming had 33 kills, 6 blocks, 8 ace serves and 23 digs, and Bruning followed with 16 kills, 6 blocks 10 ace serves and 19 digs. Fairbanks said the rally scoring method is a new feature of match play this year and the teams are still getting used to it. “We finished second in the first-round pool behind TC Central, then ended in a three-way tie for first in the second round, losing out to a trip to the bracket play by tournament format language,” she said.

“The team played very well for our first official match of the season. We will be heading to the Lake State University Invitational on Saturday,” she continued. The junior varsity team traveled to Rudyard last Saturday and won the tournament.
