FLASHBACKS: Twins share ?New Year’s Baby? title

The newly-elected Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners welcomed two new board members with the election of Richard Strzelecki of District 3 and Wayne Vermilya of District 1. Chuck Rhode was re-elected chairman and Emil Plath, Jr. was voted vice chairman. Both the Rogers City Educators’ Association and the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education were awaiting the next step toward “fact-finding” in an attempt to break a stalemate in contract negotiations.

A new athletic code went into effect at Rogers City High School, which set higher standards for student athletes, with tougher penalties imposed for rules violations. The code was designed to be in effect even during time when school is not in session. Tough defense by the Huron boys basketball team resulted in a 63-37 victory over Cheboygan. Ryan Curtis led the Rogers City attack with 14 points and played outstanding “D,” according to coach Pete Bush. Chris Sobeck had 11.

Michael Ratz was named Presque Isle County’s new undersheriff by sheriff Henry Clendenin, Jr. David Garno, formerly of Rogers City, accepted a position with the U.S. Government, Department of State. He will assume his position with the American Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Chris Marx, 17 years old and a member of the junior bowling league, rolled a 615 series on games of 231, 243, and 141.

Tom and Mary Becker, formerly of LaSalle-Peru, Illinois, were the new co-owners of the Ben Franklin store in the Mariners Mall. Receiving Good Citizenship awards at Rogers City Elementary School were Jennifer Strzelecki, Tracy Socia, Joseph Mulka, Elmer Schleben, Brad Taylor, Jennifer Ries, Joo Hee Chung, Jennifer Morrill, Julie Morrill, and April Lehman.

30 years ago, January 9, 1975

Members of the 1975 Presque Isle County Board of Commissioners were Raymond Hitchcock, Leonard LaFave, George F. McCreery, Arnold Wyrembelski, Edwin Taratuta, Ruth Doyle, Leo Goetz, John Nowak, Emil Plath, Daniel Darga, Cash Budnick, and Walter Centala. A convicted two-time murderer was apprehended in an Onaway bar by area law officials. Acting on a tip, the Cheboygan State Police, with assistance from the Onaway Police and the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department, apprehended Constance Lee Haines, an escapee from the Detroit House of Corrections.

Candles, flashlights, lanterns, and firewood were very much in demand as Rogers City experienced a “blackout.” Twins shared the honor of New Year’s Baby of the Year. Christopher Arthur L

eeseberg was born three minutes ahead and one pound heavier than brother Jonathan Alfred. The boys were delivered by Dr. Thomas Allum, January 4.

40 years ago, January 14, 1965

On January 11, at 7 p.m. Peggy Claus called the 5 Sewing Sisters meeting to order. Carol Link called the roll and read the minutes. The girls worked on their outfits. Peggy brought the treat. A-P Super Service was advertising the ’65 Dodge Polara. It had “full foam seats, plush carpeting” the ad stated. It also took regular gas. Minelli Motor Sales, Inc. celebrated the expansion of its facility with an open house.
