Hurons suffer first conference loss of the season

The Rogers City volleyball team lost in five games to a scrappy Cheboygan squad on Monday. The Hurons played close to the net and battled back and forth with the Chiefs in a fast-paced grudge match. Both teams went into the match on the Chief’s court with perfect Straits Area Conference records of 4-0. In the end some unorthodox play by the Chiefs put the Hurons off their game at a few critical points and Cheboygan grabbed the victory.

Coach Mary Fairbanks said the Cheboygan team caught the Hurons off guard and even though the girls managed to battle back a number of times during the match, they simply ran out of time. The match started out with a 25-21 victory for Rogers City then the next two games went 15-25 and 17-25 in the Chief’s favor. In the fourth game the Hurons won decisively 25-13 before losing a grueling final game 15-17.
