Huron players make all-conference teams in volleyball and basketball

Several Huron athletes received honors as the Straits Area Conference announced its all-conference teams. Ashley Fleming made the volleyball first team and was named player of the year in the conference. The senior is one of two Hurons to make first team.

THE OTHER IS senior Becky Bruning. Both were key parts of the Hurons’ conference championship squad. Senior setter Megan Hanson and sophomore middle hitter Dana Fairbanks each made the second team. Senior setter Carrie Haselhuhn was honorable mention. Other members of the first team are Summers Captain of Rudyard, Katie Porter of Cheboygan, Liz Stempki of St. Ignace, Kelli Clear of Cheboygan, and Dana VanSloten of Rudyard. Everyone but VanSloten is a senior. Coach Mary Fairbanks, in her first year at the helm, guided her squad to a 42-11 record and a berth in the district finals where the team lost to Pellston.

NO HURON made the first or second teams in basketball, but three earned honorable mention. Seniors Chris Paschke (11.2 points per game) and Charley Smolinski (7.2 ppg), along with junior Austin Fairbanks (3.0 ppg), earned honorable mention. The Hurons were seventh in the conference with a record of 2-10, and 5-16 overall for coach Karl Grambau. Highlighting the season was a win in Alpena over the Class A Wildcats.

Trent Salo, a junior from Rudyard who led the league in scoring with an average of 18.2 points per game, was named player of the year. Other members of the first team are Garrett Becker of St. Ignace, Brent DesArmo and Brian Hancock of Cheboygan, Dan Somers of Alcona, and Chris Schroeder of Rudyard.
