Vikings move on to quarterfinals to face Nimrods after regional championship

It?s the Vikings vs. the Nimrods in Tuesday?s quarterfinal game. The Posen Vikings (24-0) won the Newberry regional Friday with a 66-52 win over Brimley. The Watersmeet Nimrods (23-1) were 50-37 winners over North Dickenson Saturday to claim the MTU regional.

The teams will square off Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the campus of Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.

What is a Nimrod? According to the Watersmeet School website, the school began using the nickname the “Nimrod” in 1904. By Biblical accounts, Nimrod was “a mighty hunter before the Lord.” According to the Old Testament, he established a great kingdom and founded a number of important Babylonian and Assyrian cities. Watersmeet, situated in the heart of the Upper Peninsula Ottawa National Forest, adopted the name because the forest is prime hunting land for waterfowl, deer, and bear.
