Honor grads for Posen’s Class of 2005 listed

Posen High School principal Cliff Kelly announced that 13 members of the Class of 2005 will graduate with honors. Diplomas will be granted to 27 students at commencement exercises planned for Friday, June 3. Valedictorian of the class is Matthew Ponik, son of Paul and Doris Ponik. Jaclyn Szczerowski, daughter of Theresa and the late Ervin Szczerowski, is the salutatorian.

Other honor graduates include Kyle Ciarkowski, Adam Zdybel, Eric Kerr, Curtis Beach, Dorothy Romel, Kendra Krajniak, Nicholas Goupell, Brittany Romel, Katie Lewandowski, James Sobek, and Whitney Meeder.

Matthew Ponik had a grade point average of 3.93 on a four-point scale. He was involved in National Honor Society, pep club, student council, basketball, baseball, and football, earning all-state in each sport. He plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to pursue a degree in secondary education.

Jaclyn Szczerowski had a GPA of 3.90. While a student at Posen High School, she participated in yearbook, pep club, ski club, student council, National Honor Society, Educational Talent Search, trip club, SADD, volleyball, track and served as a class officer. She won the girls track MVP award and won awards in field and sprint events. She plans to attend SVSU in the fall but is undecided on a major.

Kyle Ciarkowski, the son of Karl and Pamela Ciarkowski, had a GPA of 3.85. He was involved in football, basketball, trip club, and ski club while at Posen High. He plans to attend Alpena Community College to pursue a degree in journalism, or to join the Navy to become a pilot or aircraft electrician.

Adam Zdybel, the son of Thomas and Gloria Zdybel, had a GPA of 3.85. He was a member of the National Honor Society, student council, SADD, ski club, and the track and football teams. He plans to attend ACC to pursue a career in radiology.

Eric Kerr is the son of John and Julie Kerr. He had a GPA of 3.83 to rank fifth in the class. He received the Michigan Merit Award while in high school. He plans to attend ACC in the fall.

Curtis Beach, the son of Curtis and Toni Beach, had a GPA of 3.78. While in high school he participated in National Honor Society, trip club, SADD, pep club, ski club, football, basketball, track, and Educational Talent Search. He plans to attend SVSU or ACC to major in secondary education.

Dorothy Romel, the daughter of Leo and Denyse Romel, will graduate with a GPA of 3.74. She participated in trip club, pep club, SADD, ski club, National Honor Society, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Her plans are to attend Eastern Michigan University to pursue a degree in psychology.

Kendra Krajniak, the daughter of Gary and Lois Krajniak, will graduate with a GPA of 3.69. She has participated in National Honor Society, SADD, pep club, ski club, trip club, track, volleyball, basketball, Educational Talent Search, and Upward Bound. After graduation, she plans to attend SVSU to earn a degree in business.

Nick Goupell, the son of Sally and Dennis Goupell, will graduate with a GPA of 3.58. While in high school he participated in ski club, golf, basketball, and baseball. He earned MVP honors in golf and first team all-conference in baseball. After graduation, he plans to pursue a business management degree and play baseball in college.

Brittany Romel had a GPA of 3.42. She is the daughter of Margaret and Wayne Romel. While at Posen High, she was active in band, pep club, SADD, basketball, volleyball, and softball. She plans to attend ACC to pursue a career in nursing or X-ray technology.

Katie Lewandowski, the daughter of Stanley and Pamela Lewandowski, will graduate with a GPA of 3.37. She has participated in trip club, pep club, student council, basketball, volleyball, softball, and served as a class officer. Her plans are to attend ACC for one or two years and then transfer to a university.

ames Sobek, the son of Joe and Sallea Sobek, has a 3.15 GPA. He participated in basketball, football, track, ski club, pep club, SADD, and trip club at Posen High, earning MVP in track in 2003 and 2004. He plans to attend ACC, then transfer to a larger university later.

Whitney Meeder, the daughter of Linda Meeder, will graduate with a 3.08 GPA. While in high school she participated in basketball, volleyball, and track, earning all-conference and honorable mention all-state awards. She plans to attend ACC to pursue a career in criminal psychology and play basketball, then transfer to Eastern Michigan University.

The annual awards assembly is scheduled for May 27 at 9 a.m. with a graduation mass set for May 29 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Casimir Catholic Church. Class Night is Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. Class sponsor is Howard Madsen.
