Huron softball team starts season 3-2 after split with Alpena

The Hurons played softball in two completely different kinds of settings this week. First came a trip to Marquette for three games on the artificial turf in the Superior Dome and warmth of inside conditions. Then came the rude cold winds of the home field Tuesday and a doubleheader with Alpena.

TUESDAY AT Gilpin Field, the Hurons split with the Wildcats, 5-3 and 11-3. “I’m happy to get the win over Alpena in the opener,” said coach Karl Grambau. “I’m really impressed with the way the Alpena players swing the bat.” The Hurons were the ones swinging the bats in the opener as they scored three in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 5-3 win for Ashley Fleming. Fleming went all seven innings, striking out 10 and allowing three hits and two walks.

Laura Konieczny’s solo homer in the third opened the scoring, then her sister Jess drove in the second run with a single in the fifth. Three scored in the sixth, aided by a pair of Wildcat errors.

TIFFINY KRUEGER got the start in the second game, working the first five innings. She allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk. Jess Konieczny and Fleming each relieved in the sixth. Megan Hanson, Laura Konieczny, Jenny Smith, Liesa Kelley, and Jess Konieczny each had a hit in the game. Rogers Cit

y fared well in Marquette, taking two of three in the 12-team tournament on the bouncy surface inside the dome. Two games were played simultaneously with home plate located in each end zone of the football field.

The Hurons lost a tough 3-2 game to Marquette in the first game. Fleming pitched well, allowing just four hits, several of the Astro-turf bounce variety, and she struck out four. Game two went to the Hurons, a 6-3 winner over Sault Ste. Marie. Fleming went all seven innings, striking out 11 and allowing three hits. Sophomore second baseman Laura Konieczny blasted a home run while Krueger added two hits.

GAME THREE of the tournament was a 10-5 win over Gaylord. Jess Konieczny earned the win on the mound as she pitched six innings, allowing eight hits. She helped her cause with two RBI. Dana Fairbanks and Krueger also drove in two runs. The Hurons are back in action Monday as they host Hillman for a doubleheader beginning at 4:15 p.m.
