Hurons move to 9-2 with wins over Boyne, Newberry

Too much Huron hitting and pitching made Newberry?s trip to Rogers City a cold one. That and the steady chilly Lake Huron breeze made for a miserable afternoon Tuesday for the Indians as the Hurons took two mercy-rule wins over the visitors. The Indians found out why Rogers City (9-2) is ranked number one in Division IV in the coaches? poll. In the first game Ashley Fleming spun perfection on the mound, retiring all nine batters she faced in a 15-0 win. She struck out six in the game.

The Hurons benefited from eight walks as they tallied 13 runs in the second inning. The big blow came off the bat of Chelsea Brege, who blasted a grand slam home run. Rogers City made the best of its six hits. In the second game a trio of Huron pitchers shut out the Indians in five innings of an 11-0 win. Tiffiny Krueger started and got the win for her two innings of one-hit work. Jess Konieczny pitched the third and fourth innings, no-hitting the Indians while recording four strikeouts. C.J. Calabrese pitched the fifth, striking out one batter. The Hurons scored three in the first inning, one in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth inning.

At the plate Calabrese had three hits while Dana Fairbanks had a double and a single. Leadoff hitter Laura Konieczny scored three times in the contest.
