Softball team remains rated number one in Division IV

The number-one ranked Huron softball team improved to 15-2 with six wins this week. Rogers City remains on top of the coaches? poll as the top team in Division IV, a place it has held all season long. The most recent wins came Tuesday in Alcona where the Hurons battled the Tigers and very cold conditions. Ashley Fleming no-hit the Tigers in the opener, a 15-0 win for the Hurons. She struck out six and allowed just two runners in the first inning, one a on walk while the other was hit by a pitch. Senior shortstop Jess Konieczny had two hits, including her first home run of the season. Sarah Dove and Terri Schultz each had two hits in the game. In the second game with Alcona, C.J. Calabrese went all five innings in a 14-3 Huron win. Alcona scored three runs in the first inning then Calabrese shut them down the rest of the way. She struck out four and allowed four hits.

THE HURONS won the State Farm Tournament Saturday with two wins. A six-run second inning keyed an 11-1 win in the first game over Sault Ste. Marie. Tiffiny Krueger and Calabrese each worked three innings, combining to allow six hits while striking out six. Jess Konieczny had five RBI to pace the hitting attack. Fleming shut out Posen in the championship game as she stuck out 10 and allowed three hits. Rogers City scored single runs in the first three innings of a well-played game. ?We played good defense all day,? said coach Karl Grambau. ?We work a lot on defense and it shows.?

LAST THURSDAY the Hurons took two games from the Vikin

gs in Posen. Fleming started and finished both games on the mound. In the first game, a 14-1 Huron win, the senior right-hander pitched five innings and struck out five, while allowing two hits and two walks. She had a big game at the plate, collecting three hits and three RBI. Sophomore catcher Dana Fairbanks had three hits with two RBI. The Hurons won game two 9-3 with Fleming allowing three Posen hits. She struck out 12 on a bitterly cold day while walking five. At the plate, she had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Jess Konieczny, Laura Konieczny, and Liesa Kelley each had two hits.

The Hurons play at St. Ignace today (Thursday) and host Cheboygan Tuesday in a battle for the lead of the Straits Area Conference.
