Little League round-up

The Minor Girls All-Stars have been busy playing several games over the last week, with all but one ending up in victory. After a 25-2 whitewash of Cheboygan Tuesday, the players will take their 3-1 tournament record into tonight?s 5 p.m. game against North Emmet. Nikkie LaLonde was three-for-three and earned the win on the mound against Cheboygan. She scored five runs and motored around the bases and the beat the throw home for an inside-the-park home run. Brooklyn Idalski was three-for-four with four runs scored, while Courtney Streich was four-for-five. Brena Hincka chipped in with a pair of hits. Earlier in the week, the girls dominated Harbor Springs, 28-4. Anna Couture was four-for-five for the Stars, while LaLonde, Rebecca Meredith, and Rieana Altman were all three-for-three. Sabrina Urban was two-for-three with three runs scored and Abbey Delekta was two-for-two.

Monica Urban earned the win on the mound. The only bump in the tournament road came in a close 6-5 loss to Onaway. The girls had a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth but couldn?t get the final three outs. ?We didn?t play well defensively,? said manager Joe LaLonde. Nikkie LaLonde had a double and a triple and knocked in a pair. Couture had two RBI. The team had its highest scoring game of the tournament run in their playoff opener against Tri Rivers in a 31-4 win. Tri Rivers struggled to throw strikes, which didn?t seem to be a problem for Cassie Brege, the winning pitcher, and the sound defense behind her. Couture was two-for-two with four runs scored.

Major Boys Rogers City was one win away from playing in the finals against Petoskey, heading into action Wednesday (past press time) against North Emmet. A win against North Emmet would match them up against Petoskey tomorrow for a chance at a district title. The Major Boys would have to knock them off twice, because of a 3-2 loss earlier in the tournament. The boys knocked off Harbor Springs 8-4 Tuesday with Alex Jozwiak earning the win on the mound. Greg Tulgetske and Scott Couture both knocked in a pair of runs, while Chad Karsten was one-for-one.

If the squad plays Petoskey Thursday and wins, they?ll take on the host team in a winner-takes-all game on Friday. The 3-2 loss to Petoskey wasted a 14 strikeout performance by Jesse Wilbert. He had a no-hitter going through the fifth inning. Rogers City led 1-0 in the sixth inning and was one out away from winning when a call didn?t go their way. It appeared as if the runner was out, at first, but the ump called him safe. The next day, the ump apologized to the coaches for the blown call. The runner would factor in the scoring with the game getting knotted at one apiece and sending the contest into extra frames. Rogers City scored one in the ninth and led until Petoskey scored two in the bottom of the inning to win.

Couture was two-for-three with two RBI. Austin Brege had a pair of web gems with two diving catches. In the opener last Thursday, the boys scored two in the fifth and seven in the sixth to roll past Harbor Springs, 10-1. The game was tied at one-all in the fifth inning when Rogers City blew the game wide open. Jozwiak fanned 14 and Brege went three-for-three with four RBI.

Junior Girls Two games played and two easy victories. That?s what the tournament has been like so far for the Junior Girls. The latest victory came in a mercy-shortened contest Tuesday at Newberry against Tahquamenon Falls, 15-5. Sammie Brege (8 K) pitched four innings to get the victory, while Janice Ciarkowski fi

nished off the final inning. Ciarkowski was three-for-four with three runs scored, while Katie Tulgestke was two-for-three with two runs scored. Collecting two hits each were Greta Grambau, Patti Getzmeyer, and Brege. Against Petoskey in the district tournament opener, the girls played an errorless game in a 14-0 win. Ciarkowski (1 H, 3 K) started and earned the victory. Katie Tulgestke was three-for-three with four runs scored, while Christine Bednarski was one-for-one with three runs scored. Sara Carpenter was two-for-three. The girls were in action at Newberry against Petoskey Wednesday, past press time.

Junior Boys Coach Adam Florip has been asking as many people as he can to drive to Petoskey Friday for the Junior Boys? district tournament opener at 6:30 p.m. He has been encouraging his family and friends to be there to cheer the boys on as they play Petoskey, a community that has a Little League program that rivals Rogers City?s. If the boys win, they?ll be back in action Saturday at Petoskey at 4 p.m. If they drop the game, they?ll be playing at noon.
