Miss RC pageant set for July 29

Five young women will vie for the title of Miss Rogers City, 2005 in the Nautical City Queen?s Pageant July 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers City High School. All the girls will be seniors at RCHS in the fall, and will seek to succeed the current title-holder, Kristyn Blackmer. Pageant director Pennie Kelly, in her eighth year as director of the pageant, has had the contestants practicing for the past month, honing their talent routines and rehearsing for the show.

Contestant number one is Nicole Grulke, daughter of Randy and Bonnie Grulke. She is sponsored by the Lighthouse Restaurant and Lounge, Tulgetske Farms, Grulke Hardware, and the Presque Isle County Advance. Nicole attended pre-school and kindergarten at the Grambau Center and grades one through eight at St. John Lutheran School. She enjoys horseback riding, bowling, reading, playing guitar, singing, playing with her little brother, swimming and boating. ?I entered the queen?s pageant to have a great time. I?ve met many new people and have gotten to know most of them better. I am in the pageant for the experience and the great opportunities,? she said. She plans to attend a four-year college to major in music and theatrical arts and minor in physical therapy.

Sara Belusar is contestant number two, the daughter of Carol and David Belusar. Sara is sponsored by Nowak?s Kitchen and Doors, and NAPA Auto Parts. She participates in cross country and track and enjoys performing in band and vocal music and outdoor activities. Sara attended first through eighth grades at St. John Lutheran School and was home-schooled for kindergarten. ?I entered the pageant to have a fun summer with my friends, grow as an individual and be a representative of my community, she said. She plans to get a college education, majoring in music, and take every opportunity to travel and learn.

Katy Fryske, daughter of Phil and Rose Fryske, is contestant number three. She is sponsored by The Engine Shop, Sunrise Garden and Grains, and Catalano Forest Products. Katy attended St. Ignatius Catholic School for eight years. She likes to read, dance, run and listen to music and hang out with friends. ?I always watched the pageants, ever since I was a little girl. Since then I wanted to be in it and thought it would be fun,? she said. Her plans are to attend Alpena Community College to earn a nursing degree and later transfer to Ferris State University for a higher degree.

Contestant number four is Jessica Hempel, daughter of Chris and Krista Hempel. She is sponsored by Rogers City Area Zonta Club, Dr. Ryan?s Dentistry, and Zgorski-Micketti Plumbing and Heating. Jessica attended St. John Lutheran School through eighth grade. She enjoys reading, baking, swimming, and playing flute and saxophone in her free time. ?I entered the Nautical City Queen?s Pageant because it is an opportunity to earn scholarship money for college while getting the chance to learn some hip-hop dance moves with my friends,? she said, Her future plans are to become a professional musician and play many different types of music, such as jazz, classical, rock, and Celtic music. She also wants to go sky-diving, travel all over the world and write her own book.

Deanna Dimick, daughter of Don and Marilyn Dimick, is contestant number five. She is spon

sored by Ed Lamb and Associates and Independent Bank. She attended school up to seventh grade in Port Huron and continued her education in the Rogers City schools. Her hobbies and interests include aerobic activities, playing music on various instruments, singing, reading, and writing. She is interested in animals and the subjects of psychology and fashion. ?The reason I entered the pageant is for the once-in-a-lifetime experience and to become closer to already good friends,? she said. She plans to attend ACC and then transfer to a four-year university to earn a master?s degree in elementary special education.

The contestants will compete for scholarship money and receive many prizes donated by local merchants.
