Pair of teens arrested for vehicle theft, cabin break-ins

A weekend of camping turned into a mini crime spree for a pair of teenagers from White Lake and Highland. Deputies from Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department were dispatched to a report of multiple cabin break-ins in Allis Township at 10:35 p.m. Friday, and the theft of a 2005 Saab. Presque Isle County central dispatch issued a ?be on the lookout? notice in the surrounding area for the vehicle. Ironically, the owner of the vehicle thought he had seen it on M-33 traveling south, as he and several friends were returning from dinner in Montmorency County.

The vehicle was located in Montmorency County and officers initiated a traffic stop just west of the Montmorency County Sheriff?s Department. Officers in Presque Isle County were at the Patrick Prevo cottage, which had been broken into, and learned that a nearby cabin owned by Gary Matthew Courterier of Onaway was broken into as well.

DEPUTIES TOLD the victims they would be traveling to Montmorency County and would return after handling things there. Of five individuals in the vehicle, Montmorency County deputies had taken the driver and one passenger into custody, after the pair were ?admitting to everything,? the incident report stated. The other three individuals were from Atlanta, who, according to statements made to officers, were asked to show the suspects how to get to Gaylord. The 17-years-old Highland suspect and the 16-year-old from White Lake, both males, were described as being ?very cooperative.? During questioning the 17-year-old youth said they had been on a camping trip and were in the area trying to find a friend who was supposed to be at a cabin in the area.

A VEHICLE they had been driving earlier became stuck between 2 and 3 p.m. The two walked through the woods and thought they would need a place to stay, reports state. They came across Courterier?s boat and thought it would be a good place to spend the night. The older of the two went through a window and let the 16-year-old in Courterier?s cabin. They took blankets and pillows and other assorted items and stored them in the boat. The suspects wanted to make co

ntact with some friends who had been with them when the vehicle became stuck, and allegedly entered into Prevo?s cabin.

ACCORDING TO the police report, they saw the keys to the vehicle and a cell phone on a shelf, and decided to take them. Also stolen from the vacation residence was a cooler full of beer, pop, and walkie-talkies. The two had been drinking shots of whiskey prior to looking for help, the report states. The 17-year-old, who did not have a driver?s license, was charged with unlawful driving away of an auto and two counts of B & E, while the 16-year-old will have his case heard in Family Court.

The owner of the Saab, Dylan Michael Wren, 25, of Rochester Hills, had his vehicle returned by officers from Montmorency County. The officers? reports were turned over to the Presque Isle County prosecutor?s office.
