Posen defense stifles Hale during an 18-2 second quarter run, hosts Mio tonight

The Posen girls basketball team cruised to an easy victory over Hale Tuesday to improve its record to a perfect 2-0. The Vikings used a stifling 18-2 run in the second quarter run to pull away from the Eagles and win the contest 67-34. ?I thought we looked pretty good defensively,? said coach Tom Schellie. The Vikes started the season with a 61-52 win at Fairview last Thursday, which sets up tonight?s game against the Mio Thunderbolts. The JV starts the action at 6 p.m. If Posen can play defense the way it did against Hale and keep turnovers below 20 (it was 18 against Hale), then the chances of defeating the North Star League power improve greatly on the home floor

MARY CALHOUN scored a total of 43 points in the opening week of action. She had 23 against Fairview and 20 against Hale. Calhoun and Roxann Hincka stood out in the second quarter against the Eagles. Both had steals which were converted into layups and both were pumping in the points from the free throw line. The two were nine-for-10 from the charity stripe in the quarter. Hincka was dominant under the boards with a team-high 20. Calhoun had four steals, a game-high seven assists, and five rebounds. Jenny Ciarkowski also had three steals.

Overall, Schellie was pleased with the way the entire team played in the contest. After roughing up Hale in the second, the girls came out flat in the third, but the coach still like the hustle and tenacity in the second half. W

hen asked what grade he would have given the girls in the second half, he said an ?A.?

?I WAS VERY impressed with our fast break and I was very happy with the defense,? said Schellie. ?Rebounding, I was very happy with that in the second half.? Hincka scored 18 in each of the opening-season victories, while Amanda Pieczynski put in eight against Hale. The Vikings led from start to finish against Fairview, but had to thwart a challenge. After building a 20-point lead, Fairview trimmed it all the way down to four, but didn?t have enough to make it all the way back as the Vikes kept them in check down the stretch.

The JV won its first game against Hale, 56-46. Kori Latz had 16 for Posen. Against Fairview, the game was a near deadlock the entire night. The score was tied four-all after one, 11-all after two, and 23-all after three. In the end, Fairview was two points better, 27-25, in the fourth quarter. Ashley Sobek scored eight points.
