Brimley on tap for homecoming game

Rogers City will put its 7-6 record on the line for Friday?s homecoming contest with Brimley. The Bays (8-4) are in the midst of one of their best seasons in recent years and should prove a tough test for coach Karl Grambau?s team. ?Brimley is really strong. They are a very, very good team. We are hoping the home crowd will give us a big boost,? Grambau said. The Hurons lost 72-59 in Brimley on December 16, but look to defend the home court on homecoming. Brimley has won its last five games.

LAST FRIDAY at Rudyard, the Hurons gave the Bulldogs nearly all they could handle in a 54-52 Rudyard win. Rogers City played from behind most of the game, tying the score at 52-52 with about a minute left. Poor free throw shooting (4-of-14) cost the Hurons as they missed all five attempts in the fourth quarter. Rudyard led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime. The Hurons trailed 45-37 heading into the final frame.

BRET KARSTEN scored 17 and Chris Santini added 11. Justin Wilbert scored eight and Scott Kowalewsky scored seven points, and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the team in that category. Rogers City shot 41 percent from the floor, including a respectable 6-of-19 from three-point land. The Hurons committed just nine turnovers in the game. The Hurons host Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday then play at St. Ignace February 17 and at Inland Lakes February 21 in a game rescheduled from January 3.

THE HURON junior varsity (5-8) suffered a tough 54-52 loss after leading most of the way. Leading 52-48, with about a minute to go, the Hurons went cold at the free throw line and Rudyard rallied for the win. Scott Grulke scored 14 points while Kevin Fairbanks added 12 in the contest.
