Budnick seeks seventh term, Rogers City without a school board candidate

One of the first deadlines for candidates to file for school board positions in Presque Isle has come and gone with only three candidates submitting petitions and signatures to the county clerk before 4 p.m. Tuesday. Posen and Onaway have the minimum number of candidates, while there will be no candidate on the ballot in Rogers City. The Posen Consolidated Schools Board of Education will be looking to fill one position during the regular school election May 2 and Dennis A. Budnick is not ready to call it quits yet. Budnick is finishing his 24th year on the board and will be seeking a seventh consecutive term. He was the second of the three school board candidates to file.

In the Rogers City Area Schools, board member Jo Bush-Glenn of Hawks did not file for re-election. Any interested candidates for the four-year term in Rogers City will need to file as a write-in candidate by April 28 at 4 p.m. Interested candidates also will have to complete a declaration of intent form.

Onaway Area Community Schools has two candidates for two positi

ons. Sharon J. Lyon would like to continue serving on the board after her appointment last year, while newcomer Christopher A. Church of Onaway will be part of what looks be an uncontested race, if there are no interested write-in candidates. School board vice president Erik Schultz did not file for re-election. The school board positions are four-year terms and will expire June 30, 2010. Along with deciding school board candidates, voters will have a ballot question to answer from the Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Intermediate School District, which is asking for a special education millage renewal of .6426 mill.

The proposal would be for five years through 2010. The last day to register to vote for the May 2 election is April 3.
