Hurons fast-break by Hillman, 62-27

A game like Tuesday was just what the doctor ordered for the Hurons. After shooting poorly in a loss to Newberry last Friday, the Hurons turned up the heat in a convincing 62-27 win over Hillman. The teams played slow and deliberately in the first quarter, highlighted by junior guard Andy Tulgestke?s seven points in the frame. He launched a three-pointer at the buzzer which found nothing but net to give the Hurons a 14-5 edge.

Constant Huron pressure paid off in the second quarter. Leading 24-12 with 1:30 left in the second quarter, the Hurons reeled off the final eight points of the half. Baskets by Justin Wilbert, Justin Senff–off a steal by Wilbert?Bret Karsten and Evan Vogelheim gave the home team a 32-12 lead at halftime. Coach Karl Grambau had his charges turn up the heat in the third quarter. The Hurons were looking to fast-break as they came out of the locker room. Rogers City scored the first eight points of the second half, with Karsten getting four?two set up by a great pass from senior guard Chris Santini.

With 2:28 left in the third quarter, Santini nailed a three-pointer to give the Hurons a 25-point lead. Scott Kowalewsky?s banker with seven seconds left in the quarter made the Huron lead 47-22. Grambau used his reserves the rest of the way and they played well. Nick Kowalski scored six points in the final quarter, highlighted by three free throws, after being fouled while attempting a shot outside the arc.

?I was pleased that everyone worked hard on the defensive end and that led to some good decisions on the offensive end,? Grambau said. ?Everyone we put out there did a nice job.? Balanced scoring and ball movement were keys to the win, Grambau said. Karsten paced the scoring attack with 16 points while Wilbert had nine. Vogelheim and Tulgestke scored eight each, while Kowalski and Kowalewsky each scored five. Vogelheim led the team with five rebounds while Eric Kieliszewski had two blocks.

LAST FRIDAY the Hurons led most of the way, but lost 41-36 to Newberry. Cold shooting cost the Hurons, as they connected on just 14-of-56 from the field, including a dismal 1-of-17 from three-point land. Rogers City led 16-8 after the first quarter and 23-21 at halftime. The lead increased to 32-28 heading into the fourth quarter. Karsten scored 11 points while Kowalewsky and Wilbert each had eight. THE JVs won a great overtime game with Hillman, 47-39.
