New career milestones reached by three seniors

It was a night of milestones last Thursday in Onaway with three seniors reaching career marks. Dylan Centala climbed into territory enjoyed by only one Huron in the more than 30-year history of the RCHS wrestling program. Centala joins Duane Woloszyk, who wrestled from 1995 to 1999, as only the second Rogers City wrestler to win more than 200 matches. He won two at Onaway to clinch number 200 and 201. With five more victories, he can pass Woloszyk who has 205 career wins, and claim the top spot. With a pair of duals at Whittemore-Prescott and the Straits Area Conference meet Saturday, Centala will have a chance to make history this weekend.

Cody Wenzel won match 150 during his first bout at Onaway, while Mark Grulke joined the century club with his second win. Wenzel moves into eighth place on the all-time win list with 151 wins, three victories behind Casey Viegelahn at 154. Senior Brian Krueger is in 11th place all-time with 142 wins. Onaway wrestler Andrew LaLonde also won his 100th match, along with a grappler from Sault Ste. Marie.

?IT WAS A whole night of milestones,? said Rogers City coach Pat Lamb. ?One hundred is a benchmark for being a good wrestler, 150 for great, and 200 is basically phenomenal.? The Hurons improved to 20-1 by defeating the Soo, 57-14, and Onaway, 65-9.

?I was really pleased with the way we wrestled last Thursday,? said Lamb. ?It was a great atmosphere in Onaway.? Double winners for Rogers City were: Brian Krueger (112), Brent Freel (119), Tharin Wilk (125), Alex Matthews (130), Centala (135/140), Wenzel (145), Tyler Schuiteman (152), Chase McLennan (171), and Grulke (189). Single winners include T.J. Sobeck (103), Zak McLennan (140), Jerome Gapczynski (160), and Derek Schleben (215). In JV action, Michael Vogler (119) defeated an opponent from the Soo.

The Hurons have a couple of tough duals with Whittemore-Prescott and Freeland tonight before the conference meet Saturday, which begins at 10:30 a.m. Rogers C

ity will be looking to win its second consecutive conference title. Mio took it two years ago. ?Cheboygan, the Soo, and St. Ignace will be battling us for the top spot,? said Lamb. Rogers City will move some wrestlers around and void 160 and 275.

THE HURONS will be home next Thursday going for their 20th consecutive team district title. The schools that are supposed to be there are Boyne City, Onaway, and Mancelona. Boyne City had not sent in their entry form as of Tuesday. If there are only three teams, Lamb said he will not take the bye and wrestle first at 6 p.m. Lamb believes the boys deserve the support.

?We had a meet with Oscoda at home not too long ago that hardly anybody came to, because they all knew the outcome, because we wrestle them so much,? said Lamb. ?I certainly hope that, for something as special as us going for our 20th consecutive district title that it doesn?t matter if people think it is a foregone conclusion. I hope that they show up in droves to support our team. In my humble opinion, I think they deserve their support.?
