Onaway announces top honor students for 2006

Onaway High School is proud to announce that 14 seniors will graduate with honors this year. Commencement will be May 28 at 2 p.m.

Valedictorian of the Class of 2006 is Echoe Bouta, graduating with a 3.969 GPA. Bouta is the daughter of Tony and Jolene Mason of Millersburg.

During her freshman year, Bouta was in volleyball. As a sophomore she started her career in the National Honor Society, eventually to serve as its president. Bouta served as class vice president her junior year, and as student council vice president in her senior year.

She has also been actively involved in Ski Club, Art Club, and Key Club. Bouta volunteered as a PIA tutor for two years. She represented her class in her junior and senior football homecomings.

After graduation, Bouta plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study biomedical engineering.

The Salutatorian is Katie Brown, who earned a 3.944 GPA. Brown is the daughter of Kurt and Marleen Brown of Onaway, and Robin Brown of Houston, Texas.

As a freshman, Brown played for the JV basketball team. She served as the class president her sophomore year, and as the key club president her senior year. Brown has been involved with band and pep band all four years of her high school career, serving as the pep band drum major her senior year.

Brown volunteered as a teacher assistant, as well as a mentor. She has been actively involved in the youth group, student council, yearbook, Drama, and Key clubs. She plans to atten

d Central Michigan University in the fall to pursue a career in human services.

Morgan McDowell (3.906) is the daughter of Theresa and Andy Kroll of Onaway. She played basketball, volleyball, softball and track during her four years at OHS. She served on student council, was a class officer, and also a teaching assistant.

McDowell was inducted into the NHS her senior year, and represented her class in the 2005 homecoming court. She was actively involved in athletic council, orange team, and prom committee. She volunteered as an assistant Little League coach, and also coached jr. high volleyball.

After graduation, McDowell plans to attend Michigan Technological University to study biological sciences.
