Hurons softball results

Rogers City (4-3-1) will try to get back in the win column after dropping a pair to Petoskey Tuesday. The Hurons were set to host Alcona Wednesday (after press time). Sophomore lefty Elly Plath scattered five hits over six innings in a 3-0 loss in game one. All three of the runs were unearned, as Petoskey capitalized on several Huron errors. Plath struck out four and walked one.

Plath and Heather Kowalski managed the only hits off Petoskey freshman Andi Gasco. Coach Karl Grambau said Plath pitched well enough to win, but giving Petoskey two extra outs in the fourth and fifth cost his team.

ROGERS CITY lost 3-2 in the second game, as Tiffiny Krueger was tagged with the loss. Krueger, in her first outing on the mound for the season, allowed two runs on two hits in the last two innings. Hannah Bellmore started, pitching the first four innings, and gave up one run on one hit. Laura Konieczny had a double and a single. Chelsea Brege had an RBI single in the fifth. Moni Cercone and Kowalski had the other hits. Rogers City had a scare when Konieczny collided with a Petoskey player at first base in the bottom of the fifth. Konieczny left the game and Coach Grambau said it appears that she has sprained her knee and is listed as questionable for the State Farm Tournament in Rogers City on Saturday. ?We need to play more doubleheaders like the one in Petoskey. They have a quality team and it is great competition. We came up short, but these type of games will help us down the road,? Grambau said.

THE HURONS took two games from Rudyard Monday. In a typical northern Michigan spring day which started warm and finished cold, the Hurons mercied the Bulldogs, 18-3, in the opener and won 6-0 in the second game. Bellmore went all four innings in the first game, allowing four runs, three hits, and a walk while striking out five batters. Senior outfielder Liesa Kelley had four hits while Cercone, Dana Fairbanks, Courtney Ciarkowski and Kowalski added two each. Brege had an inside-the-park home run. In game two, the Hurons scored two in the first, one in the second and three in the fourth as Plath notched the win. With two out in the first inning, Brege singled and Fairbanks walked. They both scored on a hit by Bellmore. Plath worked six innings, striking out five and allowing two hits. Kowalski had two hits in the contest.

LAST FRIDAY the Hurons split a pair with the Tigers in Hillman. Plath won the opener, 3-0, on a one-hitter. She struck out five in the contest. The Hurons broke a scoreless tie in the fourth on a one-out walk to Brege, followed by a shot off the bat of Fairbanks. The junior catcher drove a ball into the teeth of a strong wind, which hit the left field fence for a stand-up double to put runners on second and third. Ciarkowski then delivered a base hit up the midd

le to drive in two runs. The Hurons lost 3-1 as they collected only four hits in the contest. Bellmore went all the way, allowing just two hits, three walks and one earned run. Coach Grambau thinks the team is getting better everyday. “Pitching has been solid; hitting will continue to get better. I am most pleased with the way the girls get along and always pull for one another. It has been a great team effort so far and I think everyone just wants to continue to improve.” In the State Farm Invitational Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., Posen plays Sault Ste. Marie and Rogers City plays Oscoda at noon.

The losers of the first games square off in the consolation game at 2 p.m. and the winners of the first games play in the championship at 4 p.m.
