Mio Body Shop/Bons Boys win fourth in a row
Bonnie Derry?s basement is getting full with all of the tournament trophies Mio Body Shop/Bons Boys continues to win for her. The team has won four Nautical Festival men?s titles in a row. ?I don?t know what I am going to do,? said Derry, walking off the diamond at the conclusion of the two-day tournament. Is she going to stop sponsoring the team because there is not enough room? ?No, never, never, never, never! I love it.? Mio Body Shop/Bons Boys (MBS), as in Bonnie?s Boys, played come back softball to defeat Kinncos, a talented group of softball players led by Rogers City native Chad Malocha. Kinncos avenged an extra inning loss to the Rogers City Hogs, a group of players that stays at Jerry Chrzan?s house every year and have played under the name of Sports Factory.
KINNCOS MERCIED the Hogs, 30-14, to advance to the finals, needing two wins to claim the top spot. Mio Body needed only one, but got off to a slow start with three runs in the first two innings. STILL WITH some life, Kinncos answered with two in the top of the seventh to tie the score at 31-all. MBS would not be denied the title trophy as the first two runners got on board, and with one out, Scott Weaver hit a single to deep right center field to bring in Troy Russnell from second. That made the final 32-31. Matt Mulder, who was five-for-five in the title clincher, was named the most valuable player. According to tournament organizer Karl Grambau, the tournament featured 25 teams. The last local team to win the men?s tournament was 26 years ago when Kelly?s Venture Inn claimed the top prize.
