Fourth quarter comeback gives Posen win against Hillman

Posen still has Hillman?s number in girls basketball. It did not look like it through most of last Thursday?s contest, but the Vikings dialed up the number in the fourth quarter to put away a good Tiger team, 61-56. They made it two in a row Tuesday with a road win against Alcona, 58-40. Next up is a pair of home games with Mio tonight and then Tuesday against Hale. Against Alcona, coach Tom Schellie said the girls stepped up the defensive pressure to build an early 16-9 lead. He switched from a man-to-man defense to a zone and the Tigers had no answers in the first half. The lead was 30-16 heading into the third quarter.

The girls were getting in the passing lanes and hustling, the coach said, and by the end of the evening they had 16 steals. Half of the thefts were converted into points, the coach said. On offense they pushed the ball up the floor. Mary Calhoun had a game-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds. Jenny Ciarkowski added 13, while Roxann Hincka was on par with another double double. She had 11 points and 10 boards.

THE VIKINGS needed a fourth quarter comeback against Hillman last Thursday. It seems the same players from both schools have been facing off in girls basketball for the last couple of years. While both have loads of experience, Hillman had the up

per hand through the first three quarters. They were moving the ball extremely well and getting the open shots.

With six minutes to go, the Vikes found themselves in a nine-point hole, but started digging themselves out with a Janice Ciarkowski three and a jumper in the lane by Ashley Sobek. They also shot well from the free throw line. Calhoun, who ended with a game-high 24, was two-for-two, while Hincka was three-for-three in the fourth quarter. Hincka kept the Vikings in the game in the first half with 15 of her 19 points in the first two quarters, while Calhoun warmed up in the second half with 16 points.

?Hillman got tired. They were not moving the ball as well,? said Schellie. ?We made our foul shots, too.? The JV won both of their games, 47-28 over Alcona, and 42-34 against Hillman. Tina Mulka led the Vikings with 12 against Alcona and was followed by Victoria Wozniak with 10. Wozniak was the leading scorer against Hillman with 16.
