Area writer needs your vote for Court TV contest

She worked in education for 26 years, teaching English at Onaway High School, as well as heading the drama department. After retiring in 2002 from OHS, Peg Herring pursued her love for writing full-time, and now she needs your vote to help her win Court TV?s contest, The Search For the Next Great Crime Writer.

Herring explains on her website (www.pegherring.com) how she ?wandered into writing without conscious intent.? As the director of plays for the Onaway High School Drama Club, Herring found herself writing her own scripts for the students to act out.

?I found it was difficult to get just the right comedy script, so I wrote one,? said Herring. ?That led to my students making requests?and shows that fit our school?s drama preferences began to spin around in my head.?

Herring ?re-worked? traditional fairy tale concepts into comedic and delightful productions, including her spin on Rumpelstiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel, as well as an original entitled Four Chicks, Three Hunks and a Frog.

Now that Herring is retired, she still enjoys involving herself and her talents into her community, and she enjoys writing full-time.

The television show Court TV posted a contest to promote its new series Murder by the Book, which airs Fridays at 11 p.m. The contest, The Search for the Next Great Crime Writer, chose five finalists from the more than 900 entries it received. One of those finalists is Herring for her book Her Highness? First Murder, a mystery set in the era of Henry VIII.

Herring was interviewed for Court TV?s blog, and said she is the ?Next Great Crime Writer? because she is invested in her story.

?A great crime writer has

to care about the story, whether it?s truth or fiction,? said Herring. ?Fans want to know how people involved in the extraordinary events react, both perpetrators and victims, and they want a plot that is both exciting and satisfying. I work very hard to entice people into my novels so they want to know what?s going to happen in the end.?

The contest runs until December 29; therefore, it is important for Herring?s local community to log on to Court TV?s website and vote soon. The prize for the contest winner is $1,000, as well as a publication contract with Regan Publishers, an imprint of HarperCollins.
