Reign of New Year?s baby to come to an end

It has been a little more than 50 weeks since the birth of the 2006 Advance New Year?s baby, Ethan Romel. Romel, who is the second son of Nathan and Sherry Romel of Posen, is doing quite well. He was born on January 15 and already is walking, talking, and wrestling with his brother. ?He says Mom, Daddy, and bad baby,? said Sherry. The ?bad baby? came from Ethan getting in trouble for eating some of the pine needles on the Christmas tree.

Early on December 26, to no surprise, Sherry could be found unplugging the Christmas tree and hauling it out into the yard. Levi, six, said his brother also can say ?grandma? and ?grandpa.? Sherry quickly corrected him and said it sounds more like ?bumpa? and ?gumma.? To show off his verbal skills, Sherry took the cat?s bells and started ringing it to try and get Ethan to say ?Here kitty, kitty.? ?Here kitty,? said Ethan.

The little tike has been walking since before he turned eight months. He was moving from room without the assistance of a love seat or table chair to glide along. Sherry said one of the problems she had was keeping him from climbing on the Christmas presents. Without any prompting, Ethan climbed on the back of his walker and smiled. Sherry said Ethan has been a joy-filled baby, who is not difficult to make smile — unless it is snowing. When it snowed earlier this month, Sherry took her boys outside and all Ethan did was scream.

While snow may not be to his liking, Christmas presents were. ?He liked opening presents,? she said. ?I did not think he would.? Sherry said her family enjoyed the gifts the last year and used all but the baby?s first free eye exam, which is good for three years. Ethan will relinquish the title ?New Year?s Baby? as the old year passes into the new. The Advance awaits the arrival of this year?s ?New Year?s Baby? as 2007 approaches.
