Posen netters take down NSL rival Hillman

The Posen Viking volleyball team battles with the Hillman Tigers every year in the North Star League conference, and last Thursday the competition between the two rivals came to a turning point, as the Vikings beat Hillman in five games, 26-28, 14-25, 25-21, 25-16, and 15-10.

GAME ONE started out the long evening of volleyball action with the Posen and Hillman teams playing a game of errors. Each team seemed to be looking for that spark to get the action going in their favor, but the game took a point-by-point direction. Hillman pulled past the Vikings late in the game, taking it to a mandatory two-point winning margin. In game two, it looked as if Posen was going to fizzle out on their home court. The action started with several dynamic saves on both sides of the net, but halfway through the game, Posen lost its momentum. Hillman took the lead and the advantage, heading into game three with a two-win lead over Posen. Both teams were equally matched in effort in game three, as Posen battled back to stay in the match. Action went point-by-point for the first three quarters of the game, but the Vikings took off after hitting the 21-mark on the scoreboard. Junior Beth King stepped up to serve and led Posen to a victory, keeping them in the game.

Game four was all about the Posen Vikings, as the red and white stepped up the action, taking a quick lead. Hillman lost its momentum, and several team errors cost them crucial points. Posen took the win to tie up the match, and it

would take a fifth game to determine the champ.

COMING OFF the momentum from game four, Posen came out with the upper hand over the Tigers. A big kill off a blocked ball by senior Mary Calhoun put Posen in position for a win at 14-8. A Hillman serving error would win the game for the Vikings. For Posen, senior setter Megan Pieczynski racked up 21 assists, while Calhoun earned nine kills, seven ace serves, and four digs. Senior Jenny Ciarkowski had seven kills, two aces, and five digs. Junior Elyse Perrault racked up five ace serves, three kills, and three digs. Junior Katie Olsen had seven digs, and two aces.
