Posen volleyball takes on Fairview for a win

The Fairview Eagles volleyball team is small in numbers, but willing to fight. The Viking volleyball team found this out last Thursday when they battled the Eagles for a victory in four games, 25-9, 25-20, 22-25, and 25-23.

THE FIRST game went well for Posen and they jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead over the Eagles. The serving skills of seniors Jenny Ciarkowski and Megan Pieczynski led the Vikings in the first half of the game, while several Fairview hitting errors kept the ball on the Viking?s side. A big hit from Posen?s Michelle Mulka, followed by a kill from junior Beth King landed the Vikings at a 20-7 lead. A kill from junior Renee Purol set up Posen for the win, and Fairview prepared to battle back in game two. Both teams played evenly in game two, starting off with a 4-4 tie. A kill from Mulka would pull Posen ahead, followed up by a kill from junior Kori Latz. The Posen frontline found it tough to battle against its own hitting errors, and before they could run off with a win, Fairview inched closer, trailing Posen 7-12. Two kills from Posen ? one from junior Elyse Perrault and the other from Latz ? would leave Fairview looking at a second loss, although not by a large margin.

Posen started off game three with several errors, setting the tone of the game and leading the Red and White to an eventual loss. A kill from Latz paired with the serving of Perrault put Posen into winning position at 14-9, but the Viking team couldn?t hold out. It would take the fourth game to bring Posen back with

a match victory, but it wasn?t handed over easily. Ciarkowski started the game with an ace serve down Fairview?s center, but several Posen errors would bring the advantage over to the Eagles? side. A kill from Posen?s Melissa Wekwert, paired with an ace from senior Mary Calhoun would tie the game at 8-8. The serving skills of Mulka pulled Posen ahead 14-9, and forced a Fairview timeout. The Eagles came back to tie the game again at 16-16, but a tip from Ciarkowski would give Posen the ball. The Vikings fought for the win point-by-point. A kill from Calhoun and an ace from Perrault would finally land Posen the match.

FOR THE Vikings, Pieczynski had 28 assists, four aces, one kill, and two digs. Purol had four kills and two digs, while Latz had three kills, one ace, and two digs. Mulka had two aces, three kills, and three digs, while Ciarkowski had two aces, seven kills, one block, and two digs. The JV Vikings battled it out with Fairview, adding another victory to their record, 25-17, 25-9, and 15-4. For Posen, Emily Smolinski had one dig and three ace serves, while sophomore Bonnie Schmitz had four aces. Freshman Amanda Lenard had eight aces and two kills, while Cheryl Romel had one kill, three assists, one block, and three ace serves. The Vikings host Hale tonight (Thursday) and Mackinaw City Monday. They travel to Atlanta for a make-up game on Wednesday to wrap up the regular season.
