Charlevoix falls to Hurons in volleyball districts

It didn?t matter that the championship game would be played on the opponent?s home floor or that their opponents were ranked in the top 10. All that mattered Saturday in Charlevoix was that the Lady Huron volleyball team came out with a determined effort to win the district volleyball title.

THE HURONS now face Suttons Bay Saturday at noon in the regional semifinals at Gaylord High School. Whittemore-Prescott, winner of the Mio regional, faces Kingsley, a four-time district champ, in the 10 a.m. game. The winners will square off in the title game, set for approximately 2 p.m. with the regional champ to play in Tuesday?s quarterfinal at Kalkaska. Kingsley (39-19-5) defeated host Manton 25-14, 25-10, 25-16 then beat Mesick (25-18, 25-16, 25-7) in the district finals. Mesick took four games to knock out Maple City Glen Lake (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22) to advance to the title game.

LAST SATURDAY, Rogers City (34-20-3) went toe-to-toe with host Charlevoix (41-12-1) in the district finals and came out victorious over the number-ten ranked team in Class C. The Hurons came out strong in the first game, a 25-13 win, but lost a bit of momentum when Charlevoix won the second game, 25-15. Rogers City came back to win the third game, 25-11, then lost 20-25 to set up the deciding fifth game. A 15-8 win left no doubt the Hurons were the best team on the floor that day, as they advanced to the regional

s Saturday at Gaylord.

THE HURONS defeated Harbor Springs in the semifinals (25-16, 25-11, 25-18) while the Red Rayders topped Inland Lakes (25-15, 25-19, 25-18) and Boyne City (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23) in the other side of the bracket. Senior Dana Fairbanks led the team with 26 kills and added 21 digs and two blocks. Jenny Fleming had 17 kills, 22 digs, seven blocks, and five aces. Simone Kapala had 16 kills, 17 digs, and seven blocks, Elly Plath had 47 assists, 17 digs, and five ace serves. Monica Cercone had 10 kills, 13 digs, and added three blocks and three aces. Lauren Hanson had 15 digs and four aces.

THE SUTTONS BAY Norse (52-12-2) defeated Kalkaska 25-21, 25-10, 25-22; Traverse City St. Francis 25-13, 25-13, 25-16; and East Jordan 25-19, 25-21, 25-14, to advance to the regionals. The Norse has reached the Class C semifinals each of the past two seasons and were state runner-up in 2001. The winner of the Gaylord regional will advance to the Kalkaska quarterfinal game to play the winner of the Ishpeming Westwood regional.
