Hurons open home baseball and softball seasons

A glorious spring day greeted the Huron baseball and softball teams last Friday as they each opened the home portion of their schedules by facing off with Hillman. The girls team won both games over Hillman, 7-2, and 11-6 to improve to 4-0 on the young season. Junior lefthander Elly Plath went all seven innings and struck out eight to earn the win in the opener.

Dana Fairbanks and Laura Konieczny each had three hits. Fairbanks continued her terrific day at the plate by banging out three triples and a double in the second game. The senior catcher scored four runs and drove in three in the win. The Huron baseball team lost a tough decision in eight innings then came back to win the nightcap.

Rogers City tied the game at 4-4 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Hillman scored four runs in the extra frame to steal the win. Isaac Freel worked the first seven innings, striking out four, walking two and allowing four hits. He gave way to John Rhode, who suffered the loss.

Three runs in the first and four more in the second inning powered a 7-5 darkness-shortened game two against Hillman. Freel had three hits and Scott Grulke added two in support of winning pitcher Nick Kowalski.

Both teams are in action Monday at Rudyard.
