School board offers Byrne three-year supt. contract

Four members of the Rogers City School Board traveled to Pinconning and Vanderbilt on site visits in order to gain a better perception of the top two candidates for the superintendent position at Rogers City Area Schools (RCAS), Daniel Byrne and Jeff Liedel. During a special meeting last Wednesday, the school board unanimously voted to offer a three-year contract to Daniel Byrne, the current middle school principal for Carbon County School District in Rawlins, Wyoming.

?THIS WAS the toughest, easiest decision we?ve had to make,? said McLennan. ?We had a great slate of candidates right down the line. All of our candidates could have handled the position. I feel comfortable with our choice. Byrne will bring a wealth of new ideas to our community?and to our children?s benefit.? Allen Smolinski said he was very impressed with the top two candidates, and gained confidence in the board?s choice after the site visit to Pinconning, Byrne?s former district. ?Both (Byrne and Liedel) were wonderful ? they could step right in and do the job,? said Smolinski. ?Pinconning no longer had a vested interest in Byrne, and they still gave him a glowing review.? All school board members were impressed with Byrne?s interviewing skills, and were pleased to know that he has strong grant writing skills as well. Byrne wrote a grant in Pinconning that brought $80,000 to the district?s literacy program. He also served on the Pinconning City Council for four years, and acted as mayor of Pinconning for one year. Although Byrne has not yet signed the contract, he said he has intentions of doing so, and that he is excited to be a future part of RCAS.

?I?M EXCITE

D to get to Rogers City for a lot of reasons,? said Byrne. ?I want to be able to be the superintendent, and I know I can do a good job. I want to bring my family closer to our family (in Pinconning) ? I have two young daughters and one on the way.? Byrne said he and his wife were very pleased with how welcome they felt throughout the interview process. ?We were really pleased with how well we were treated ? people treated us like they had always known us,? said Byrne. ?We were also really impressed with how clean Rogers City is ? it will be a good place to raise our family. It?s a good atmosphere with good people.?

Byrne is contracted to stay in his current position in Rawlins, Wyoming until June 22. The three-year contract through Rogers City would be effective starting July 1, 2007.
