RC splits with Soo in doubleheader

The Huron varsity softball team played seven games in seven days last week with two more played Wednesday in Onaway (after press time). Most recently, the team split a doubleheader Monday at home with Sault Ste. Marie. In the first game, The Soo took an 8-4 win over Rogers City, by scoring one in the first, four in the second and three more in the sixth inning.

Tiffiny Krueger started and took the loss, working the first two and one-third innings. She allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks. She struck out two. Chelsey Plume finished, allowing three runs, two hits, and three walks, while striking out seven. Freshman shortstop Katie Tulgestke had three hits while Plume had a double in the last inning, which knocked in two runs. ROGERS CITY CAME back in the second game, notching a 12-3 win in support of Elly Plath. The junior pitched all six innings, allowing eight hits, walking none, and striking out eight. Laura Konieczny had three hits, including a triple and two RBI. Dana Fairbanks had three hits and two RBI while Chelsie Brege had two hits, including a double and two RBI. ?We were flat to start the first game with the Soo. I am happy we came back and won the second game. The key for us is to be disciplined at the plate and swing at good pitches,? said coach Karl Grambau. ?We will continue to work on getting better at the plate and in the field as districts are just a few weeks away. Our schedule over the next two weeks should prepare us for the district tournament in Rogers City.? LAST THURSDAY, the Hurons traveled to St. Ignace and took both ends of a Straits Area Conference doubleheader. In the first game, with coach Karl Grambau using five junior varsity players to replace six players gone to Washington D.C. on the ?Close Up Washington? trip, Krueger struck out 11 in a 16-2 win. The senior right-hander allowed one hit and walked five in five innings. Tulgestke and Mary Smuda each had three hits. Konieczny had two triples while freshman Greta Grambau, up from the JV, and junior first baseman Jenny Fleming each had two hits.

The Hurons won game two, 15-0, as sophomore Sammie Brege took the win. Freshman Logan Schuiteman set down the side in order in one inning of relief. Both pitchers were up on loan from the JV. Brege allowed two hits, struck out four and didn?t walk a batter. Greta Grambau had three hits while Chelsie Brege had a triple and Fleming added a double. SATURDAY THE Hurons played three games at the Oscoda Invitational, winning two. The only loss came to Hillman, 5-2, in the opening game. Hillman scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Krueger pitched well, but the Hurons stranded 11 runners in the game. Krueger allowed five hits, and two walks, while striking out three. Schuiteman had three hits while Tulgestke and Fleming each had two hits. In the second game of the tournament, Oscoda led 8-0 after the top of the third, but the Hurons roared back with six in the bottom of the third inning and five more in the sixth for an 11-8 win.

The key hit of the six-run inning was an inside the park homer by Fairbanks. Grambau?s two-run single in the sixth was a big hit of the five-run inning. Krueger, who relieved Sammie Brege in the third, got the win, tossing four scoreless innings.

ROGERS CITY mercied AuGres 10-0 in the final game. Schuiteman struck out four, walked two, and allowed three hits. ?It would have been nice to win the tournament, but it wasn?t meant to be,? said coach Karl Grambau. Other than the first two innings against Hillman, Tiffiny Krueger pitched eight shutout innings, facing only 26 batters.?

Grambau praised the work of the play of the junior varsity players called up to play with the varsity. ?Katie Tulgestke, Greta Grambau, Sammie Brege, Anna Wickersham, and Logan Schuiteman played in seven games for us, and we went 4-3 during that period. Sammie and Logan both picked up their first varsity career victories as pitchers,? he said. The five players had 27 hits in 66 trips, scoring 22 runs and batting in 14. ?These five girls really helped us and it shows that the future for Rogers City softball is looking good. Tulgestke will stay on the varsity for the rest of the year while the other four have returned to the JV. The Hurons took a 12-8 record into Onaway yesterday (after press time) they host Marquette on Friday, play at the Alpena Invitational Saturday and host Cheboygan Monday.
