First varsity game on new playing surface is Friday at Gilpin

The Rogers City vs. Alcona football game Friday will be the first varsity game played on the Huron?s newly resurfaced field. Beginning in June Keith Konieczny and a handful of volunteers set off to make the bumpy and uneven playing surface a safer and better place to play football. Huron varsity coach Mike Kosiara had high praise for the work done by Konieczny. ?He has been the motivating force behind getting the field done. I can?t say enough about the man,? Kosiara said.

In June, Konieczny and crew scraped off the top layers of grass and dirt, and then crowned fresh topsoil before hydro-seeding the new grass. With constant care all summer long, the field greened up and then filled in nicely. Football lines and new goal posts were added as pre-season practice ended.

The teams have not used the field at all during practices, instead using the practice field, which Konieczny helped construct several years ago, located on the north end of Gilpin Field.
