PI Museum awarded top honor from Historical Society of Michigan

The Presque Isle County Historical Museum has received the Historical Society of Michigan’s prestigious “State History Award” for 2007. The award honors a local historical society or museum that has made outstanding contributions to the appreciation and understanding of state or local history through its collection, preservation, and promotional activities. The award was presented to museum curator Mark Thompson during the Historical Society of Michigan?s annual meeting, held last weekend at Macomb Community College.

In accepting the award, Thompson said the Presque Isle County Historical Museum?s successes should be credited to the leadership provided by the museum’s Board of Directors. The board includes president Sally Mulka, vice president Owen Lamb, treasurer Ken McNealy, secretary Amanda Polaski, and board members Char Asikainen, Ivan Buck, Jean Chronic, Pauline Cousins, Norma Crawford, Beach Hall, Marvelle McCutcheon, Dave Nadolsky, and Eleanor Prell. Thompson also accepted the award on behalf of all efforts put forth by numerous volunteers who assist with the various museum programs and activities, as well as to the local residents who have an exceptionally strong desire to preserve Presque Isle County’s rich heritage.

The Historical Society of Michigan selected the Presque Isle County Historical Museum to receive the award this year because of the many programs and activities it has implemented to preserve and promote the county’s his

tory. In particular, the society praised the museum’s acquisition and preservation of the photographic Calcite Collection, as well as its ongoing exhibits of photographs from the collection. The award also noted the reprinting of a local history book first published by Rogers City Area School students in 1947, and also for its local history education project. This project, funded last year by the Huron Shores Humanities Council and the Rogers City Kiwanis Club, provided a variety of local history curriculum materials to each school in the county so that future generations will know and appreciate local history.

The Presque Isle County Historical Museum is located on Michigan Avenue in downtown Rogers City. For more information, call (989) 734-4121, or visit www.thebradleyhouse.rogerscitymi.com.
