Huron boys get off to good start with win over Inland Lakes

It?s one game and one win in the books for the Huron boys? basketball team. Coach Karl Grambau?s charges traveled to Inland Lakes and came home with a 67-51 win. ?It was a typical first game of the season,? Grambau said. ?There were a lot of turnovers.?

In the starting line up for the Hurons were Scott Kowalewsky at center, Jordan Zempel and Scott Grulke at the forwards, with Jacob Vogler and Bret Karsten at guards. The Hurons led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and increased that to 31-23 at halftime. Rogers City increased the lead to 44-32 at the end of the third quarter. Scott Kowalewsky had 20 points, Bret Karsten scored 19, Scott Grulke scored 12 and Justin Idalski added nine.

Grambau said there are a few kinks to work out of the system before playing at Rudyard Friday and against St. Ignace next week. ?We didn?t rebound very well and we gave up a lot of second chance baskets to them,? Grambau said.

Rudyard is a tough challenge, but his team matches up quite well, Grambau said, as they return several key players and bring up the core of a top-flight junior varsity squad. The Rudyard JV defeated the 16-4 Huron JV twice last season.

The Huron junior varsity, under coach Mike Grulke, took a 60-38 win over the Bulldogs. Tyler Szumila scored 14 points while Eric Meharg added nine as 11-of-14 players scored.
