Karsten named first team all-state end

Rogers City wide receiver Bret Karsten earned all-state, first team for Division 7 by the Detroit Free Press, the recognized list for Michigan High School football Karsten, a senior, capped a fine football career with an outstanding senior season. He caught 40 passes for 685 yards (17.1 average) with 8 touchdown receptions and four extra-points.

He rushed 273 yards on 36 attempts (7.6 yards per carry), scoring 6 touchdowns. Coach Mike Kosiara said Karsten was a great leader, almost like having another coach on the field. Karsten started at end for the Hurons since his sophomore season. Karsten volunteered to fill in at quarterback when Chase McLennan was injured and out for the game. He responded by rushing for 209 on 25 carries with four touchdowns as the Hurons rallied for a 26-22 win over Inland Lakes. He passed for 91 yards by hitting on 8-of-19 attempts.

The Hurons made the playoffs each of the past two seasons. He finished his career with 93 receptions good for 1,710 yards (18.4 average), 21 touchdowns receiving, and six touchdowns rushing.

A three-sport participant, Karsten is a four-year starter on the varsity basketball team and starting outfielder for the Huron varsity baseball squad. Karsten is the son of Dr. Mark and Missy Karsten of Rogers City.
