Posen Post office sending ?Treats for the Troops?

by Peter Jakey– Managing Editor

During the season of giving, staff from the Posen Post Office has been reaching out to soldiers overseas as part of an inaugural program called ?Treats for the Troops.? What started as a meansto boost revenue, which all post offices are looking at in the region, the treats have meant so much to local servicemen. Postmaster Sharon Wirgau got the word out by putting signs up around the village and in the local church bulletin that the Post Office would be sending out baked goods or snacks every week.

A canister was placed at the service counter for people to donate money to purchase baking supplies, or if there are no baked goods ready to go every

Friday, the money is used to buy snacks from a store and for postage. ?One week I didn?t have a lot of baked goods, so I went to Wal-Mart and bought Fritos and bean dip, chips, Pringles, and pretzels,? said Wirgau. They also sent out magazines and cookies to decorate.

NOTHING NEEDED to be purchased last Friday because there were plenty of baked goods ready to go. So far, 10 packages have been mailed since the middle of November. The carriers in Posen also have chipped in by donating money for postage. Wirgau said she likes to use the $8.95 bargain flat rate box. ?We try and squeeze as much as we can in there.

?We were concerned about sending chocolate because it is hot over there,? said Wirgau. ?They?ll eat it with a spoon if they have to. They are just so thrilled to get stuff.? The project began in November; if it continues its current success, Wirgau would like to extend it beyond the holidays. So, for any person interested in sending some holiday baked goods to members of the our country?s military, drop them off at the Posen post office this Friday, and while you are there, throw in a couple of dollars for postage.
